"I like the whole D(isc) J(ockeying) vibe thing"
DJing is both art and science, which involves skill of the fingers
& the mind. Knowledge of a wide range of music coupled with the love for it is essential to entertain the crowds as a Disc Jockey. Its just not only about playing records – DJ has to be able to cross fade from one disc to another, judge the mood of the audience & play the music in a smooth flow to life the crowd up & bring them down.
For a start, two turntables, known as "decks" would be required. Not just the type that is used to play vinyl on at home. These are specialist devices which allow performances including "scratching" (so beloved on hip-hop), move a record backwards to cue up a break. , etc.. Two of these would be
required to move from one to another.
To make that move smooth, a mixer will also be required allowing fading from one record to the other smoothly. Since so much music is on CD, a CD player would be required, & like the turntables it should feed into the mixer. The more ambitious (and financially flush) can add a sampler & perhaps a keyboard, but that's for the advanced classes.
The first lesson to DJing is to be able to segue smoothly from one record to the next. A helpful tip is to pick tracks with a similar B(eats) P(er) M(inute). As the first plays, the second can be cued on the other turntable. The mixer can be used to listen into the tracks and find the starting point. Practice synchronizing the first with the second disc using the faders on the mixer to create a seamless flow between the two.
Of course, it may take more than a few
attempts to progress on this very basic step, but practice is a sure shot method to master this exercise. Once confident, the same can be attempted with other records and slowly can be increased to three and four records. Once this step is mastered, fading from CD to vinyl and reverse can be tried.
Once this is mastered, the choice of
tunes is next. Most professional DJs specialize in a particular style. The bottom-line is mixing it up to keep the crowd happy & dancing. The sets need to be paced up to facilitate starting at mid-pace, building up gradually, slowing down to give the crowd a break & finally building up again to climax. Set ranges can vary from 30 minutes to a few hours depending upon various factors.
Once again practice is what will help put a set of energized tracks that work well together.
To be a virtuoso of the decks, DJing requires the same dexterity as playing any musical instrument and can be equally challenging.
