"Uttering a word is like striking a note on the Keyboard of imagination"
Keyboard is an important instrument in Western classical music,
jazz, film, television, and other western music styles. It is common to find most composers being good at keyboard as it is virtually the easiest instrument to use as a tool for composing.
Keyboard can be used to play both melody & accompaniments at the same time. This makes the Keyboard unique because no other musical instrument has this capability ! It can be used to match any instruments in an orchestra because of its’ wide range pitches. May be these facts justify the title given to the keyboard – King of instruments !
Until recently, mostly women learnt the piano. Today, however,
very few play, and the idea of sitting down at a keyboard (usually electronic, which takes up far less space than a real piano) can seem daunting.
A keyboard is the set of adjacent depressible levers on a musical instrument which cause the instrument to produce sounds. A full piano keyboard has 88 keys in total (a little over seven octaves) - electronic keyboards have less. It has two rows of keys for playing, the front and back. The front row is smooth and white colored while the back row is rough slightly raised and black colored. The white keys are whole notes (e.g. C, D, E
etc.), the black keys are the sharps or flats you'll encounter. This 3 dimensional arrangement is useful for the keys to be tactically and visually distinguished between each other. The five different black keys and seven different white keys constitute twelve tones that have been used in music for centuries. These 12 different tones are the basis and the only basis of all melodies & harmonies of all Symphonies and songs we have ever heard or will be ever hearing in this world !
Each octave consists of twelve keys - C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B (not that a sharp can also be a flat, so D sharp can also be E flat, for example). The octave is grouped two black keys then three black keys, making it easy to find C.
Well, one may ask why there are black keys apart from white keys.
If the keyboard consists of all white keys and there are no black keys between them, a full size Keyboard
would become again extra half wide. The black keys are fitted in between white ones in such a way as not to occupy any additional space so as to reduce size of a keyboard.
Imagine accommodating a standard full size 88 keys keyboard into a living room if it consists of only white keys ! Imagine the difficulties, while playing it, one can not reach out to the extreme left or right wing of the keyboard keys with bare hands, without moving here and there!.
